Named in honour of former Queen’s Chancellor, The Dr Thomas J. Moran Memorial Scholarships are life-changing opportunities that empower students to pursue their ambitions without financial constraints. For many, these scholarships represent more than just funding - they open doors to experiences that shape futures, build confidence, and expand perspectives.
Thanks to the generosity of Joan Moran; Tom’s widow, Mutual of America, and former CEO John Greed, the Scholarships provide £10,000 to four postgraduate students each year, ensuring that financial hardship does not stand in the way of academic success. The impact is immediate and profound, allowing students to focus on their studies and career aspirations without the stress of financial uncertainty.
“Opportunities like this are rare for someone from my background - it’s not often you see someone from an impoverished upbringing progressing beyond undergraduate studies. The scholarship has given me financial stability, confidence, and support to keep moving forward. All these incredible things have happened to me since I came to Queen’s, and I am so grateful to the Thomas J. Moran Memorial Scholarship team for helping make this possible." SHIELA WOODS

Beyond supporting postgraduate education, the Dr Thomas J. Moran Travel Scholarships allow undergraduate students to explore the world and gain invaluable international experience. Established by the Irish American Partnership in 2018, these awards provide £1,000 to students in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences who might not otherwise have the means to travel for study or work experience. The experience of past recipients highlights the life-changing impact of this support.
Students who receive these scholarships consistently describe them as transformative. For many, the ability to study abroad, engage with new cultures, and access education without financial hardship is something they never thought possible. The impact of these awards extends beyond individual students - it creates a ripple effect, inspiring others from similar backgrounds to aspire to greater opportunities.
